All Wrapped up in Blue

The Blue Mountains, just and hour or two outside of Sydney, are on everyones must-do in Australia list. For some reason, maybe because I’m too cynical, I assumed I would find them underwhelming- that they benefited mostly from their proximity to Sydney.

Boy was I wrong:

The Blue Moutains were stunning.  They are one of the many places in Australia that’s much easier to see by car* as you wind around the mountain roads, stopping at a cute town here, a stunning vista there.  Without a car you will never get to visit Bell’s Line of Road, the back road to the Blue Mountains with some of the prettiest scenery:

The most famous piece of the Blue Mountains can be found in Katoomba as Echo Point. Even Oprah took time in her Australia adventure to come check out the Three Sisters:

Seeing the Three Sisters from afar is neat, but you can actually hike down to the base of one for  a dizzyingly spectacular perspective:

A short drive from Katoomba is Wentworth Falls, a truly impressive waterfall. As with the Three Sisters, the coolest views are from close up:

It’s fair to say that the Blue Mountains more than lived up to my expectations. They are more than just a weekend escape from Sydney, they are an attraction all of their own, and one worth taking the time to savor.
